About CritterCost

Who publishes CritterCost

CritterCost is published by Inventum. The data is assembled and maintained by the CritterCost Data Team. We keep the site to one job: telling you what a pet actually costs, with every figure sourced and dated.

What this site is for

Think of CritterCost as a price book, not a pet-buying guide. We won't tell you which breed to get, or whether to get one at all. We put the numbers in front of you, buy, feed, groom, insure, and vet, across a year and a lifetime, built the same way for every breed so you can compare like with like. What you do with that is your call.

How the data is made and reviewed

Every cost on the site is computed by formula from public sources. It isn't typed in by hand and it isn't shaped by an author's opinion. The method is public and set out in full on our methodology page. Before a batch of pages goes live, we spot-check a sample by recomputing the numbers from the sources by hand, and we hold any page whose figures look off until a person has checked it. When a source updates, we rebuild from it and restamp the pages.

We don't sell insurance

Here is the thing that sets us apart from most sites that talk about pet-insurance costs. We are not an insurer, and we are not a broker. We sell no policies. We earn no commission on any policy, from anyone. There is no 'apply now' funnel here, and no lead form feeding a sales team.

That matters because it means our premium figures have nothing to sell you. When we say the average premium for a breed sits in a certain range, that number isn't nudged to make a product look cheap or a risk look large. It's just the number, from the sources, built the same way as every other figure on the site. The advertising on our pages is standard display advertising, clearly marked, and it never changes a single number in our data.
